I learned many things in internet marketing, but only three things working as an SEO copywriter, so I'd thought I share knowledge and pain of the things I learned and how much I've taken from it.
How I started as a copywriter
I started as a SEO copywriter three years ago when I needed a job to do from home. The first thing I learned was SEO copywriters need discipline and the ability to concentrate on your feet. What I discovered was I can stay awake for 24 hours on little more than coffee and still do my job well. I learned that staying up and working for the same basic rate of the story was not a way to get my client's respect. So I started turning down work with less than 24-hour deadline because I could not justify the toll it took my free time.
Creativity Needs Consistent Fire
Working as a SEO copywriter means I have to explore a lot. I have to create a SEO copy from scratch, Mecate reins so I can keep working. I must keep reading and make sure that my research does not take me to places where I'd reuse the information. I make sure not to get complacent and keep myself inspired so that I'm not going to start running low on fresh angles. I kept exploring totally unrelated areas to make the connections that mark our acceptable SEO copy that burns into the reader's soul. I make it a point to read on weekends equally splitting between fiction and catch up with current affairs and break edges of the most common content I write for my clients. This is how to keep myself fresh, and gives down time too.
Working With the Copy Editor
Copy editors get paid to make sure that the SEO copy meets grammatical accuracy, and editorial direction standards. I like criticism; it is part of being a writer. I can complain, get bitter or chew it up, swallow it, or spit out. I can say this with a straight face that while I want everybody to tell me how great, I write, I need all the criticism to grow as a professional SEO copywriter. Even best sellers have someone who tells them to tighten up a bit.
SEO Copywriters are sensitive artists. They hate being criticized. If you want to be a copywriter, get over yourself and learn to love your copy editor. So no matter how much I hate my SEO copy editor, underneath my frustration is a small piece of me swallowing her medicine. Bottom line is, keeping a strong relationship with your SEO copy editor can substantially increase the quality of editing.
